The research is carried out at Aukštaitija and Žemaitija and Preila integrated air pollution research stations. To estimate the long-range transmission of air pollutants from other countries. Their impact on the overall pollution level of the Lithuanian air basin. Change in the main types of Lithuanian landscape. Transformation of pollutants and effects on the condition of relatively natural ecosystems. The research are carried out in implementation of Directives 2004/107/ EC of the European Parliament and of the Council relating to arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air. And 2008/50 / EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe. The obligations of Directive (EU) 2016/2284 of the European Parliament and of the Council to monitor the adverse effects of air pollution on ecosystems (requirements of Articles 9, 10 and Annex V), taking into account the country's obligations under the European Monitoring and Evaluation Program EMEP) and the requirements of the International Cooperative Program on Integrated Monitoring (ICP IM).

Lithuanian state air monitoring measurement data (semi-automatic sampling) Measurements was carried out at 5 state-monitored air quality research stations: Vilnius, Žirmūnai (0003), Kaunas Petrašiūnai (0041), Klaipėda Centras (0031), Šiauliai (0022), Aukštaitija (0051). From the PM10 filters exposed for 1 week (air volume pumping 2.3 m3/h), in the laboratory analyzed and reported monthly average and average annual concentrations in the ambient air of the following heavy metals: Pb, As, Ni, Cd (units of measurement for lead is µg/m3 and for As, Ni, Cd accordingly ng/m3) and the following polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, indene(1,2,3-cd)pyrene (units ng/m3). The results of the measurements are presented in accordance with the following legislation: 2008 May 21 Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe (lead in ambient air measurements); 2004 December 15 Directive 2004/107/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council relating to arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air.
