Riparian zones data include transition areas between terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems with distinct hydrological, soil and biotic conditions that are strongly influenced by flowing river water. Land cover and use are classified according to the biodiversity monitoring needs in an adapted buffer zone around major and medium-sized European rivers (Strahler level 3-8, obtained from the EU-Hydro dataset). The classes in the Riparian Zones dataset correspond to a nomenclature consisting of MAES ecosystem types (levels 1 to 4) and Corine land cover thematic classes (classes 80) with a minimum mapping unit of 0.5 ha and a minimum site width of 10 m. During the Copernicus program, the European Environment Agency coordinated the production of the Riparian Zones kit.
